LAPO Microfinance Bank, the leading Microfinance Bank in Africa partners Chess in Slums Africa (CISA) a non-governmental organization supporting indigent children through the game of chess and other social interventions.

Children are one of the most vulnerable groups in Nigeria, the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) report of the National Bureau of Statistics, stated that about 67.5 million out of 99.6 million children in Nigeria are multidimensionally poor. Also, according to an October 2022 report by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), about 20 million children were out of school in Nigeria. These children are illiterate and deprived of formal education in Nigeria, an unsolicited condition for the children.

Oluremi Akande, Director Marketing & Communications, LAPO Microfinance Bank in a media briefing stated that "beyond providing financial products and services, LAPO MfB through its various social interventions is leading in the efforts to bridge social deprivation gaps in Nigeria, especially in the areas of education and empowerment.” Furthermore, he added that “over 4,000 of our clients’ and indigent children in the society have benefitted from our scholarship and skills acquisition programmes respectively with over N 500 million disbursed to achieve this feat."
